Evidence-based interventions to prevent binge drinking and related harms include: Increasing alcoholic beverage costs and excise taxes. Limiting the number of retail alcohol outlets that sell alcoholic beverages in a given area. Consistent enforcement of laws against underage drinking and alcohol-impaired driving. Screening and counseling for alcohol misuse.
In the United States, many states currently allow for alcohol check points, particularly during holidays, in order to be able to catch drivers who have been drinking.
In 1984, the Federal Government enacted the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which calls for reduced Federal transportation funds-the money States use to build and repair their highways-to those States that did not raise the minimum legal drinking age to 21. Today, drinking by anyone under age 21 is against the law in every State and in the District of Columbia.
