Social drinking is generally defined as use in social settings where no harm occurs to the user or others; alcohol abuse occurs when alcohol is used in situations or amounts in which the user or others might be harmed, as in cases of drunk driving.
Over 40% of teens surveyed who admitted drinking said they drink alcohol when they are upset; 31% said they drink alcohol alone; 25% said they drink alcohol when they are bored; and 25% said they drink alcohol to "get high."
Moderate to high doses of alcohol consumed in before bedtime can lead to narrowing of the air passage causing episodes of apnea even in persons who do not otherwise exhibit symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
Women who drink more than one alcoholic drink per day increase their risk for motor vehicle crashes.
