  • What is alcohol abuse? Alcohol abuse is a health issue. It is characterized by a maladaptive pattern of drinking alcohol that results in negative work, medical, legal, educational, and/or social effects on a person's life. The individual who abuses this substance tends to continue to use it despite such consequences.
  • National monitoring systems are needed to be able to keep track of alcohol consumption and its consequences throughout the United States, in order to raise awareness and enable debate amongst the public and the policy-makers in the White House.
  • The legal limit for drinking is the alcohol level above which an individual is subject to legal penalties such as being arrested, or the loss of a driver's license; in many states, driving while intoxicated can lead to mandatory jail time.
  • In 2003, the percentage of first-semester boys and girls who binged on alcohol at least twice a week was 41 and 34 respectively.
