Alcohol is the leading cause of death for persons under age twenty-one.
As many women under age 30 are drinking at levels that could be harmful to their unborn children, and because an estimated 45 percent of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned, the babies of those women who do abuse alcohol may already suffer damage before mother discovers they are pregnant.
In the single year 2005, there were more than 1.6 million hospitalizations and more than 4 million emergency room visits4 for alcohol-related conditions.
According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, it was determined that college students were more likely to intervene in a drunk-driving situation if they knew and liked the driver, but only if the driver was evaluated to be dangerous and they felt that they would be able to help. Students were less likely to intervene when they were drunk themselves, or when they were afraid of how their intervention would affect their relationship with their peers.
