In the past three years, New York City has experienced a steady increase in children between 12 and 17 checking into the ER with injuries from binge drinking, going from 899 to 1,211.
Adolescents, age 12 to 17, who consume alcohol are more likely to report behavioral problems, especially aggressive, delinquent and criminal behaviors.
Long-term, heavy use of alcohol can lead to addiction (alcoholism).
Alcohol acts as a depressant on the central nervous system. This can lead to a decrease in physical and mental activity and at the same time an increase in anxiety and tension.
